Students are learning words to extend their vocabulary. It is more important that they understand the word meanings and how to use the words in speaking and writing. Students are engaged in explicit daily instruction and practice, but we also encourage home practice. We learn 8 words at a time. The vocabulary words support students' understanding of the weekly reading selections. Sight Words
Sight Words (also called High Frequency Words) are words that occur frequently in text. Click here for an explanation of Sight Words. Students need to know how to read these words automatically (within three seconds). Students should also know how to spell these words to improve writing fluency. Regular home practice will help prepare students for their weekly check-ins. Click here for the first list and here for the second list. |
