What Second Grade Readers Have Been Up To
Text Dependent Questioning:
A big emphasis this year is building students' comprehension of high-quality text through "text dependent questions". Students will be expected to use details that they have read in a text to support their answers to questions both orally and in writing. Check back soon for more information on this critical skill and ways to help your reader at home.
Three Big Questions:
We will be utilizing the 3 Big Questions to help students develop meaning while reading:
1. What did the author think I already know?
2. What confused me?
3. What surprised me?
Sign Posts:
We will use signposts as an avenue to build deeper comprehension. There are fiction and nonfiction signposts. Fiction sign posts include Again and Again, Memory Moment, Ah-ha Moment, Words of the Wiser, Contrasts and Contradictions, and Tough Questions. Nonfiction signposts are Contrasts and Contradictions, Absolute and Extreme Language, Word Gaps, Quoted Words, and Numbers and Stats. Look for more info coming soon!

Summarizing:
Students are working to summarize texts that they read to show comprehension. Summaries are always written in the student's own words and they are meant to be brief.
A fiction summary includes:
-information about characters and setting
-explanation of problem and solution
-a brief count of important sequence of events
A non-fiction summary includes:
-the main idea
-several important supporting details
